چکیده
Information appliances (IAs) are mass-produced, low-cost devices for specialized computation/communi-cation tasks. Examples include webTV, smart cellular phones, and web phones. Since low cost and low power-consumption are important requirements in the design of these devices, IAs use relatively slow/cheap CPUs (usually 20{40 MHz). Real-time audio and video communication over the Internet is an integral part of many IAs which means that despite slow hardware , the communication subsystem within the OS must be able to eeciently handle heavy network traf-c. This paper presents a protocol architecture which reduces I-cache miss overheads (beneeting short audio messages) and also enables use of single-copy without any hardware support or restrictions on network APIs (beneeting long video messages). We implemented UDP/IP to evaluate our architecture and measurements show that overheads for short messages are reduced about 20% while overheads for long messages are reduced 15{22%.

On end-to-end architecture for transporting MPEG-4 video over the Internet
|With the success of the Internet and exibility of MPEG-4, transporting MPEG-4 video over the Internet is expected to be an important component of many multimedia applications in the near future. Video applications typically have delay and loss requirements, which cannot be adequately supported by the current Internet. Thus, it is a challenging problem to design an e cient MPEG4 video delivery ...
متن کاملA Study on E cient Delay Distribution Methods for Real - time VBR Tra c Transfer
| Future packet switching networks should provide various services that require diverse levels of QoS(Quality of Service). Among these services, real-time VBR video tra c is thought to be di cult to meet QoS requirements because of its high burstiness. In this paper, we study an e cient delay distribution scheme that allocates the end-to-end delay bound into the end-station shaper and the netwo...
متن کاملThe Renegotiable Variable Bit Rate Service: characterisation and prototyping
The tra c generated by multimedia applications presents a high degree of burstiness that can hardly be described by a static set of tra c parameters. We present a dynamic QoS negotiation scheme applied to a prototype application that provides temporized data transfer. The dynamic and e cient usage of the resources can be reached with the introduction of the renegotiable variable bit rate (RVBR)...
